Zachary McCarty Biography

Skipping Cub Scouts, Zach joined Troop 34 in Lewisport, KY the fall of 1991. He remained active in this Troop as part of Shawnee Trails Council #200 in KY until it folded and then joined Troop 36 where he completed his Eagle Scout. In Shawnee Trails Council, he served on Cub Scout Resident Camp staffs in 1995 and 1996 at Camp Wildcat Hollow and later served as Eaglebound Director (First-Year camper program) at Camp Roy C. Manchester in 1997 and 1998. During his seven years as a youth, Zach was actively involved in the local Order of the Arrow Lodge (White Horse) serving as Lodge Treasurer, Lodge Secretary, and later Lodge Chief. In 1997, he received his Vigil Honor. Zach completed Council Junior Leader Training (JLT) in 1995 and served on it’s staff in 1997. He also went on two council contingents, one to Philmont in 1995 and another to the National Jamboree in 1997.

During college, Zach remained active with his Troop back home and completed Wood Badge Course SR-216 in Shawnee Trails Council. In the summer months, he served on staff at Philmont Scout Ranch first as a Ranger in 1999, then a Mountain Trek Ranger in 2000, and a Ranger Trainer in 2001.

While attending professional school in Birmingham, Zach attempted to remain active, volunteering as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Scout Troop 237 and attending local meetings and campouts as best he could between studies. Following these four years, he moved to Chattanooga for a residency and jumped back into Scouting full-time. Currently, he is active as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 172 in Hixson, TN at St. Jude Catholic Church. Within the Mountain District, Zach has served as Training Chairman. For the Council, he has served two years as Dean of the Youth Leader Training Program and is beginning his second year as overall Dean for the University of Scouting. Zach helped as the Logistics Coordinator for the 2010 Centennial Scout Show. Recently, Zach attended the 2010 Centennial Scout Jamboree and served as one of the eye doctors on the medical staff. For awards, he has earned his Scouter Training Award. Last year, Zach began serving as Cherokee Area Council Training Chair and continues in that role today.

When not involved with Scouting, Zach enjoys spending time in outdoor pursuits with his lovely wife, Britney. They are often seen together camping, on trail runs, hiking, and the occasional rock climbing (at the gym and outdoors).

Zach served as a Troop Guide on Wood Badge Course SR-831, was the Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop Guides on Course SR-948, and will be Course Director/Scoutmaster for this course, S6-556-11-1.
